Shared Story Time

Thursday 12 October 2017

Here at Swift we are passionate about English! Our vision is to build a community of readers and writers where our children love to ‘booktalk’ – what we like, dislike and what makes good writing!

Part of this mission is to build shared reading time where the class share a novel for ten to fifteen minutes every day (where possible). From nursery to year 6, we are sharing a whole novel together as a class. In Autumn Term, Year 6 have looked at Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo while Year 1 have explored A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond.

A year 6 child said, “Private Peaceful is better than Eastenders! I love the suspense caused by cliffhangers at the end of chapters!

“Shared story time is a fantastic opportunity to read a whole book as a class,” says Miss Young, the English Lead, “Story telling is such an important part of learning how to read and write. It can inspire a passion for reading while developing concentration, vocabulary and expression.”

For class story time, we make sure we pick age-appropriate and interesting novels which will engage and enthuse our students to read for pleasure outside of the classroom. Watch out for regular social media updates on Twitter and Facebook where we share and celebrate our class stories.
